Loons Sept.2/10
100's of loon on the lake, Sept.2,2010
I got a phone call from a friend on the lakefront. She had a dozen or so loons off the shore. As she went to look at them she scared up a great blue heron. Which in tern disturbed the loons apparently. When I got there ,a few loons were still close in. But after a few min. Gone. I scoped it out with my lens as I could here them out on the lake.
There in my sights were 100's of loons on the horizon. I have never seen this out there this early in the year. The loon survey just ended.
We took the boat out and as we had been a day on Lake Muskoka, had to wash it all down first. When we got out there the loons were even further out. Calling, diving, making all sorts of interesting sounds. It was amazing. We saw them so far away but could not reach that group. As we had spent 7 hours on Lake Muskoka the other day we were short of fuel. So we started to head back. Then we came across another group on the other side of the lake. Families were together and some were even changing to their winter plumage.
These loons were moving faster than we were. It was a sight to behold and the sounds as I mentioned were absolutely amazing.
Was very hard to get shots but I managed to get some not to bad. Jeff took a video as well. We shut the boat off and listened and took pictures and enjoyed. We drifted amongst them at a distance still but not to far. I used my 500 and still did some cropping.
Sheila who called me about the dozen loons off her shoreline was going to grab her binoculars and try to see them. I hope she was able to find them. Because even to see them from that far away. Well there are no words to describe. All you see is 100's of black blobs out there, all calling to each other. I hardly saw any loons here this summer. But apparently they are starting migration early this year. And what a pleasure they are, their beauty is breathtaking. I can not ever imagine not having the call of this magnificent bird to hear. haunting yet tranquil and peaceful. Another good reason to look after our lakes and waterways. And shorelines. One of the many reasons.

Barrie,Ontario, Sept.2/10
As the water was to low to get Jeff's boat out at the ramp at home. We headed to Barrie. A great drive down the lake. A few more loons and grebes, bonaparte gulls and common terns along the way. Clouds looked iffy in places but rain held off until we got home later. As we approached Barrie I took some shots of the waterfront. And the Serendipity coming out as well. The sky was so amazing that I took a shot of Jeff driving with that burst of puffy clouds behind him.

Reflections on the lake,Sept,2/10
A rare thing as I am always taking the pictures. Jeff got a few of me yesterday. What an amazing day on the water. A challenge yesterday. So bright and still. Surrounded by 100's of loons that we could see but not get to. They were moving very fast, calling, diving. Amazing. So while we were hoping to get closer to the loons I could not resist these cloud/water reflection shots. Gorgeous!!
