This is one of the adult red headed woodpecker pair l have been monitoring. l have been able to watch this pair from the return of the male on April 28th(earlier than any other year). Courting ,mating, building the nest in which the male dug out 2. The female accepted the second one which faced away from prevailing winds & weather. l watched and new when the first egg was laid by their behavior and when the first egg hatched by timing it and also behavior. Right on schedule the baby popped it's head out earlier this week. When l am done documenting these birds l may post photos of the babies in the nest. But for now l am holding back on that. This nest is on private property that l have kindly been granted permission to go on to. There has been a lot of hours ,patience and photos go into this. And it has been very rewarding for sure. Within the next few days the first young will emerge. The parents are looking a little worse for wear and will be glad when they can take a rest. They are feeding green caterpillars, dragonflies, spiders and moths right now. And in between treat themselves to my peanut feeder. Are actually starting to take that to the young now as well. They will bring the young to the feeder as they have done every year. l can't wait. Watching the young try to figure out how that works is quite comical. They are excellent parents and deserve a metal for all the work they do for their family. It has been amazing.! These photos show one of the parents ( both identical) having a good feed of peanuts and then a well deserved rest.
